Curriculum
The following four Compulsory modules, including teacher exchange, were piloted during the academic year of ’08-‘09:
- Action Research (AR): A focus on the application of research skills, as well as research methodology and literature.
- Leading and Guiding (L&G): An introduction to the skills and knowledge necessary to be a competent workshop/laboratory practitioner and creative leader.
- Performance and Communication (P&C): Intensive encounters with best practice of innovative performance practice in a variety of contexts.
- Project Management and Entrepreneurship (PME): The conceiving, implementing and realising of project/business ideas.
Pilot Year
Guildhall School of Music & Drama (London, UK)
The Guildhall School of Music & Drama piloted three of the compulsory modules of the Joint Master: Leading and Guiding, Action Research and Project Management and Entrepreneurship. Exchange tutor Marc van Roon of the Prince Claus Conservatoire has contributed to the PME course with a number of exciting seminars, as have several other stimulating speakers from the UK. A mixture of postgraduate students, graduates and members of staff took part in the pilot year.
Iceland Academy of the Arts, Department of Music (Reykjavik, Iceland)
In the Iceland Academy of the Arts two students piloted the Leading and Guiding module and three composition masters students piloted the Action Research modules and Project Management and Entrepreneurship. The mentoring and the Voces Thules-workshop optional module were piloted as well. Due to circumstances it became impossible to complete the Action research but other tasks were successfully completed or are about to finish.
JAMK University of Applied Sciences, School of Music (Finland)
Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences tailored the Joint Master with 30 EC in English language. The curriculum offered Project Management and Entrepreneurship and Performance & Communication, and four optional modules. As no applications were received, the studies could not be realized. The plan to offer some modules as supplementary courses 5 ECTS each, was not supported by the administrative persons in charge.
Prince Claus Conservatoire, Groningen (Netherlands)
Leading and Guiding and Performance and Communication were piloted by the Prince Claus Conservatoire, as well as three optional modules: 'Music for Organizational Development', 'Cross Genre Improvisation' and 'The Musician as Actor'. Renee Jonker (from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague) was a visiting guest teacher for the P&C module.
Royal Conservatoire, The Hague (Netherlands)
Six students were admitted to the pilot year of the Joint Master in The Hague. Two more students doing their Masters at the RC were allowed to join some of the compulsory modules. The following modules were tested: Performance & Communication, Leading & Guiding, Project Management & Entrepreneurship, as well as the optional module African Music. The pilot year students were also able to take part in the optional module Improvisation for non-Jazz musicians.
